Architect or designer
We often get asked the question should I use an Architect or a Designer and there is no real clear cut answer to this, one thing that is certain is you will need a set a plans. There are a lot of factors that should be considered.
In general an Architect is more experienced than a Designer, but the costs can vary significantly depending on who you engage. Architects are licensed professionals, to be legally identified as an architect a person much have a formal tertiary education/degree in architecture, be covered by the necessary liability insurance and be officially registered as an architect with the governing architecture body in their state. Typically its a 5 year course at university by two years of practical work.
Building designers will likely have a degree in building design or architecture, however have not taken the extra step to register as an architect. There are no registration or licensing requirement for building designers in Western Australia.
So what's the bottom line?
It's all about the quality of the design, taking the aesthetics, function and performance of the home into consideration. You will be spending a lot of time with your chosen Architect/designer so you need to trust they are taking your budget and your needs into consideration, while pushing the boundaries and offering new ideas.
